Diploma in Horse Care

Diploma in BHS Riding Horses

What the BHS says about stage 2: "This qualification will provide you with competencies to apply general principles for the management of horses’ health and wellbeing. Working under regular but not constant supervision, you will be able to care for stabled and grass-kept horses during all seasons of the year. You will be able to ride an experienced horse or pony in the open as well as in a manège or indoor school.

To take the exam

  • You must be a member of the BHS
  • Hold your Horse Knowledge Care and Riding Stage 1.
  • Before you can undertake the riding element of the exam you must also hold your Riding and Road Safety Test
  • Be at least 16 years old (although the training can be undertaken at any age)

Certificate in Horse Care

  • Unit 1a – Groom and plait horses and fit equipment
  • Unit 1b – Fit, remove and maintain tack for exercise
  • Unit 2a – The principles of horse health and anatomy
  • Unit 2b – The principles of shoeing, clipping and trimming horses
  • Unit 4 – Lunge a horse under supervision

Award in the Principles of Horse Care

  • Unit 3a – The principles of watering, feeding and fittening Horses
  • Unit 3b – The principles of stabling and grassland care for horses

Diploma in BHS Riding Horses

  • Flat - Ride horses on the flat in an enclosed area (you must have passed this unit before progressing to the jumping unit)
  • Jumping - Ride horses over fences in an enclosed area
