Diploma in Horse Knowledge and Care

Diploma in BHS Riding

What the BHS says about stage 3: "This qualification will allow you to hone the skills you will have practised in Stages 1 and 2 and will provide you with the competencies and ability to look after up to four horses in stables and at grass in an unsupervised environment, ensuring that horses, stables, yard and fields are safe and in good order".

Currently Caistor Equestrian Centre only offer training for the Horse Knowledge and Care element of Stage 3.

To take the exam

  • You must be a member of the BHS
  • Hold your Horse Knowledge Care and Riding Stage 1 and 2
  • Hold your Riding and Road Safety Test
  • Be at least 17 years old (although the training can be undertaken at any age)

Certificate in Horse Care

  • Unit 1 – Fit tack and equipment and care for the competition horse
  • UNIT 2 – Horse health, anatomy and physiology
  • UNIT 4 – Lunge a fit horse for exercise

Award in the Principles in Horse Care

  • Unit 3a – The principles of feeding and fittening horses
  • Unit 3b – The principles of stabling and grassland care for horses

Diploma in BHS Riding Horses (not currently offered by CEC)

  • Flat – Ride horses on the flat (you must have passed this unit before progressing to the jumping unit)
  • Jumping – Ride horses over fences
